What's the Toltrazuril?
Toltrazurilis a triazinetrione derivative used as an anticoccidial agent. It is widely used in chickens, turkeys, pigs, and cattle for the prevention and treatment of coccidiosis, by administration in drinking water. Toltrazuril powder is white or off-white crystalline powder; odorless. Soluble in ethyl acetate or dichloromethane, slightly soluble in methanol, insoluble in water.
And coccidiosis, in short, is a protozoic parasite that infects the intestines of the animal it has“chosen” for its host. The results showed that the treatment with bulk toltrazuril powder successfully controlled the coccidiosis with no relapse of infection. Toltrazuril can thus be used for supplemental control with in-feed anticoccidials or as a primary anticoccidial with nonmedicated feed.

Pharmacodynamics
Toltrazuril has a wide range of effects on coccidia, and has effects on the two asexual cycles of coccidia, such as inhibition of schizonts, mitoses of small gametophytes and wall-forming bodies of small gametophytes.
Because Toltrazuril interferes with the nuclear division and mitochondria of coccidial cells, affects the respiration and metabolic functions of the parasite, and can enlarge the endoplasmic reticulum of the cell, resulting in severe vacuolation, so it has a coccidicidal effect.
Pharmacokinetics
Oral administration of toltrazuril to poultry can absorb more than 50% of the drug. After absorption, the drug is mainly collected in the liver and kidney, but it is rapidly metabolized into sulfone compounds.
Application
Toltrazuril is mainly used in poultry coccidiosis. It has a good inhibitory effect on coccidiosis.
For chickens:
Giving chickens a dose of 7 mg/kg or 25 mg/kg and drinking water for 48 hours can not only effectively prevent coccidiosis and make coccidiosis oocysts disappear, but also does not affect the growth and development of chicks and the generation of immunity to coccidiosis.
For sheep and goats:
Toltrazuril is an antiprotozoal agent that acts against coccidia parasites. It can also be used in the treatment of flock coccidiosis. Oral administration of 20 mg/kg or feeding 10-15 mg/kg of toltrazuril to lambs can effectively prevent and treat coccidiosis in lambs.
Side Effects
The half-life of the drug in chicks is about 2 days. However, recent data have confirmed that toltrazuril remains in the edible tissue of chickens for a long time, and the residual drug can still be detected in the breast muscle after 24 days of drug withdrawal.
The common side effects can be that Toltrazuril is well tolerated in recommended dose. But there is the rare side effects, that is the growth inhibition and polyneuritis may occur in laying hens egg-drop, and in broilers at high doses.
