The results of the second phase of clinical trials in 2019, cellular work, and computational modeling show why the first drug to treat asthma in 20 years can help reduce asthma attacks.Researchers from Leicester in the UK and Vancouver in Canada have shown that the drug QAW039, an oral selective prostaglandin D2 receptor antagonist, can reduce the number of smooth muscles in the lining of the respiratory tract.The findings are published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

A Phase I study evaluated the pharmacokinetics and safety of a range of doses of QAW039 powder given as single and multiple doses in 48 healthy volunteers.26 Peak concentrations of QAW039 were observed 1–3 hours after dosing with a half-life of approximately 18–20 hours. This drug was well tolerated, and the adverse events were similar between QAW039 and placebo. There were no significant adverse events or death, and the most common side effects were headache and nasal congestion.
